Imps. You are playing 2/1 with standard accessories, including 4SF.

2h - simple preference is the default action if you have nothing better to do. If you always raise with 3 card support, then you know pard does not have 12-14 with 3 card spade support, and if he has about 15-17 with 3 card support he will bid 2s after your simple preference.

2H. It's about a king short of 2D.

Pass isn't a good idea when holding 8 HCP because partner can have 17-18 (depending on how strong you play your jump-shifts as opener). But with less I think I would pass like mike777 suggested, and hope partner can score two heart ruffs.

Mickyb convinced me to play that 2C shows 11-15, but I would still never consider passing with hand. 2H seemed best, and if I was prohibited to bid hearts then I'd bid 2S, which would be normal on AQ10xx x Qxxxx xx.
Please note: I am interested in boring, bog standard, 2/1.

Okay, 2 seems normal, that's what I bid at the table. The auction continues (pass)-3-(pass) back to you. What now?

Initially, agree easy 2, may not like it much but no alternative.

Some of this depends on style (how readily you pass 2), how much in the way of extra values 3 shows in this auction and what 1-1-3 would have shown.

To me, this is how you bid a 1525 18 count as we very rarely pass 2, but many people would bid 3 on that. We bid 3 on the 6-5 just above minimum that some people would use this auction for.

The hand is a bad misfit, but the question is just how many points can we have between us ? If the answer is no more than 24, I pass, if 25-26 is possible (and with the misfit I may well need 26), I need to bid 3N vul at IMPS.

This is clearly the crux of the problem, I don't skimp on jump shifts so for me this auction could show a hand right up to "just shy of a game-force." But I don't have much more than a vague sense of how MUCH extra opener should have to bid on over the preference.

The 3 bid shows extras but modest ones. Given the extent of the misfit we have found a home.

Aunt Alice could (might?) defeat 3nt if we bid it on this auction.
