I guess you were the one that passed with Jxx then.

I think it is a bit risky to double for takeout (much less cooperative) with the North hand in that vulnerability when you have an almost certain game. You have to hold 2 doubled to four tricks to get 800. Even when pard has KJxx behind the bidder, declarer's six-bagger and one side trick is good enough for 500.

Partner won't have KJxx because you have the king. If partner has a real penalty pass then combined with your K10 you might well hold them to 2 diamond tricks.
Please note: I am interested in boring, bog standard, 2/1.

East's 2D is dubious? What should easy do, jump to 3D? Pass?

:P Sorry to have confused you by going from the specific to the general case in the same paragraph. Not good writing at all. As you can see, on the actual hand declarer wins five diamond tricks - we have to lead trumps for him lest he ruff two clubs in the dummy.

Looks to me like east ha a normal 3d bid at these colours, that gives NS a real problem. North still has to double to bring hearts into the picture, and south now faces a real dilemma. Bidding 3N will look ridiculous if north is 5413 and the cash the first gazillion diamond tricks. If instead south bids 4c, he could easily be going past the last making spot when north has some help in the diamond suit.

That would have been my choice.
... that would still not be conclusive proof, before someone wants to explain that to me as well as if I was a 5 year-old. - gwnn

Perhaps mine too, but I suspect that jdeegan thinks that east should pass. I would rather overcall 2D than pass.

Decided to take the sure plus.

Are you sure the plus is so sure with Jxx of diamonds and minimum hand ? :)
Passing this double is huge blunder. You rarely see mistake that big (in terms of EV imps) in bidding barring total brain farts and system forgets.

Maybe not, but 14 of 48 think that his partner should not be doubling with an obvious double, so I suppose that makes him feel better passing with Jxx.

This thread should be cleaned and burned.

I was one of the 14, but I think I was clear that this was based on conditions (BBO pickup partner).
