Why was a tournament hand stopped abruptly and score posted as "ave" with a 50% rating while we were still playing the hand? We were sure to make contract, plus overtricks which would have given us a higher percentage than the 50% assigned.

It was probably a clocked tournament and you ran out of time.

You were playing in an Express Free Automated Fun tournament. These tournaments have a 5-minute time limit on each hand. If 8 full tricks have not yet been completed when the 5-minute time limit expires, everyone receives "average" for the board. If 8 (or more) full tricks have been completed, then the hand is completed by robots and an adjusted score is posted based on that outcome. On the hand in question, only 7 tricks had been completed.
