In lots of situations like this, GIB doesn't bid 3N and we miss our best spot.

5D looks like a much better contract than 3NT. 3NT is off on any lead provided they switch to clubs in time.

Does that 3 explanation include "likely stop in S"? I would think that bid is looking for a spade stopper, not showing one.

That is also a very important problem.

Here 5D is better but in most of the situations like this, GIB doesn't bid 3N and it is the best contact. I posted this hand because I had this hand avaliable at the time.

I don't think gib's methods are so bad here. 2 shows a fit and once a fit has been found we show stoppers, we don't ask for them.

GIB probably made simulations based on the interpretation that 3 shows a spade stopper and found a diamond contract to work better than a notrump contract, probably due to the lack of a club stopper.

Actually I learned it as we ask for stoppers and I have never encountered anyone showing stoppers when the opponents have one suit only.
