Hello

From a team game, 7 board round, board 2.

Scoring: IMP

1 - (1)-
to you, playing 10-13 in this seat and color

your playing 10-13 NT in first seat white, medium light style.

Comment about why are always appreciated. Especially if you are planning to pass and take action if LHO bids 2H and it comes back to you.

Thanks

2D. Since I play negative free bids, this is not a problem for me.

Double. This says I want to bid, but have no bid which describes my hand. In particular, I don't have 4 (bid 1), I don't have a balanced hand with stopped (bid some NT), I don't have primary support (bid 2, 3, 2 or fit jump) and I don't have an invitational plus hand with (bid 2).

Playing with most players, I think double here should shows this hand (diamonds, club tolerance, less than 4), yes the masses play double shows 4 and 1 shows five.. so the masses are wrong.

Playing with Misho, I bid 1 with this hand (equality method), showing either diamonds or a balanced hand unsuited for a direct 1NT or 3NT response. Hey, here I have both. If partner, now retreats to 2 or 2 or 1NT that is the end of the auction for us.

Dan Neill now has the equality document on his webpage....

1NT for me. Simple and descriptive, albeit not very elegant :)

I think most play the dbl shows 4. I'm glad I don't have that agreeement, so dbl is easy.

Double seems clear cut here.

Seems perfect. I play negative free bids very often but play that they promise 6 card suit at 2 level or very strong 5.

If I'm playing with a pickup partner....
I don't X, because he'll think it promises 4 spades.
I don't bid 1NT, because he'll think i have a heart stop.
And I don't bid 2 diamonds, because he'll think it's a near game force.

(none of these are true for my regular partners...but then, I don't play a 10-13NT with my regular partners).
Sigh.

So I pass. I'll X two hearts when it comes around to me again.

It has been eloquently put in a number of posts above.

X. Denies 4S, (else bid 1S), denies the hand to bid 1NT and shows D with C tolerance. Would prefer slightly better Ds for a negative free bid of 2D.

Without NFB, dbl is the only choice.

i bid 2d... unlike mike, i subscribe to bergen's nfb definition... i have the range, i have the hand, and partner is more than welcome to pass.. 2d might just be a contract that not only makes, but is the only one that does

My bergen volume two says this d suit is too weak for NFB.

Double. For me, 1 shows five and double suggests four.
I would bid 1N with three small hearts, but a spade partial looks better here.

Perhaps the suit is too weak for a NFB, but the hand is imo not strong enough for a Dbl, 3 Jacks is rubish...

Frederick your comment makes mo sense in light of you previous comment that you would bid 2D.
2D takes the bidding to the 2 level; the X allows partner to bid 1NT. If you believe the hand is rubbish, (which I do not), then surely the bid that keeps the auction lowest is best.

1NT here as well. Seems we are the only two who bid 1NT here so far, Justin.
