That gives declarer xxx Axx Q9x KQxx to bid 3N when partner shows hearts lol. That seems extremely unlikely to say the least.

sorry, slipped an x, meant to give declarer 8xxx, Ax, Q9x KQxx, but I agree 5 diamonds is much more likely for this tempo, although the trick 1 hesitation can possibly be discounted as thinking about the whole hand, 30 secs is too long to be thinking about the Q9x issue.

I dully returned a diamond and it was horrible.

I didn't really identify why fallenius tanked that long as my experience against him is really slim. Later in the match I found out he tanks forever kinda often, very often indeed, my partner threw away 2x12 IMPs on vulnerable game swings on boards 19 and 20 for being out of time, the slow side got rewarded for taking away our time wich totally pissed me off.

On this hand I found it very hard to construct lie outs. Whenever I tried to construct options my brain returned a "too many possible club lie outs" error message and never gave me an answer.

Barring the tank and the hand etc, I have always though that partner playing a 2 being consistent with 3 small or singleton made 3 small much more likelly than preciselly singleton 2, but I am not sure if this really holds.

Fluffy, how many World and European championships have you played? If your opponents are playing slowly, ask for a time monitor. If you need to think and it's not your side's fault that the table is late, think - you're allowed to, and it should still be the opponents that get the slow-play penalty.
... that would still not be conclusive proof, before someone wants to explain that to me as well as if I was a 5 year-old. - gwnn

IMO there is a large group of (honest) slow players who will play quickly with no problem, because they often have time problems or whatever. That is my experience with Fallenius. It is ok to be slow if there is something to think about but I just can't see him taking 2 an a half minutes to play the one layout described where a diamond back is necessary.

To add to what gnasher said, even if you failed to call a time monitor, at the end they will ask who was at fault. Of course people never think they're at fault but Fredin and Fallenius will be honest and say it's all their fault if they believe that to the case. Of course this is not true of most opps so a time monitor is wise.

6 as junior but this is only 2nd as open, I think my partner here might be a bit slower that I am used to, because before I played versus AAh in Olimpiads I don't even remember having time problems before. He takes his time for a reason because it is becoming obvious that on a fast game we get really owned.

Our chances of qualifying for second round are non existant now so I think I will just let it go and play for whatever lenght I want, we are just playing for fun. Whatever the result against a top team won't carry over anyway. Not sure about late penalties though.
