It is not entirely clear that double was a failure. EW can make 4H for +620 without the double. In 4♠X (assuming EAST leaves it in), you might lose just 2H, 2S, and 1D for down two or -500 (don't show spade T or 9).

Noth will not leave a takeout double in with his hand. But it doesn't matter what the result is on any one hand (unless it is for world championship i guess)... the questin is waht is the right bid.. and double is right. Revere Norht and West hand.. .where do you want to be? They lose 1C, 1D, and 1S to make 4he, and you might lose 1C, 1D, and 1H to make 4S. What a total disaster pass would be then.. -620 when you could make 620, that is 1240 swing. Even if you go down three in 3Sx here, that is only 180 point swing (-800 versus -620).
