Teams, long matches.

You track the K, A, 2, 3

Declarer plays a low heart to his T and your Q, partner following with the 5.

(Edited)

How do you continue?

Carding ? Must be udca in order this to be a problem.

Seems like declarer has something similar to

x
AT98x
Kxxx
ATx

if so (assuming that our 2 bid was preempt) we have 2 tricks and need 2 tricks, and declarer doesn know we are that sttrong with our bid. Cash Q and when in with Q exit with . If he plays a low to dummy duck smoothly. He wont play you for 13 hcp for your bid.

If he cashes A and plays diamonds, refuse to ruff any of them discard spades.

Or he may hold

x
AT9xx
Txxx
AQx

but he cant make anyway if he has this.

I must be missing something because i didnt quite get why you asked this problem.

If I think Rho has 4 diamonds I just want to cash a spade and switch to a diamond. Our club isn't going away.

It is not going anywhere even if declarer has only 3 . Unless he made a funny bid with 7+3

I have had second thoughts. Suppose declarers shape is 1543. Now I might need to unblock the club K under the ace in order to avoid being endplayed in the majors. Suppose the layout were:

Then can if I cash the spade he can ruff, play two rounds of diamonds and a club to the ace and a club. That endplays me into returning a major, and either my trump trick or my club trick goes away.

I mean I'm not suggesting the switch to the club K is sensible or anything, but I thought it could never be right before.

If thats the case what do you lose by playing a or now ? You can always unblock your K under the ace if you see this is coming, but this is like a dd line and you lose nothing by exiting with spade or diamond now and wait how things go. He will not play the preempter for 13 hcp imo. He will take the 2nd finesse unless you showed him your hand (agree ? )

Note that the line you suggest for declarer is totally disabling him from taking 2nd finesse, because he has no more entry to dummy when he cashes 2 round of and plays A and another. This will be the funniest play of 2012 if godforbid you have Qxx and Qx .

Sorry to bore you this one. Extra marks to other Phil for figuring out a layout where it makes some sense to switch to the K, but acknowledging that there's no rush for these theatrics.

This was more of a therapeutic exercise for me. It might have been embarrassing to explain to our teammates how 4 was let in when declarer held x AT9xx xxxx AQx.

However, it was excruciating to explain how 4 made when declarer actually held x T9xxx xxxx AQx. Actually they never even asked.

Great guys - I think I'll play with them again. :)

Actually i would be more offended if they didnt even ask how we let that in ;) In that case i would not even be sure if they ever want to play with me again :P

Carding is overrated. To do the right thing, you must correctly read the situation and partner can't help you on this board.
