Here's hoping a little public shaming will help me remember...

I don't know if you like the double, but that is what I chose.
What now?

Pass. Any other action is likely to make matters worse.

Who knows? Maybe partner has lots of diamonds.

Abstain. Sorry but I simply can not live with the double.

If it's the old "south had a heart attack after the double and I was required to fill in from that point on" I guess would bid 6 because partner could never imagine this hand and passing seems like a sure bad result. Maybe partner is 1363 with the diamond queen and I get very lucky?

I wouldnt be that happy with x even if you were
QJx
void
AJx
AQxxxxx

I still like 3c better than x (though
the x is less horrendous)(are you sure
you want p to convert the x to penalty?
p may need to take 4 tricks)

over 5d x I would bid 6c

If p cannot use the club suit 5d will be a
disaster anyway. I agree with lalldonn we
need to get lucky here to survive our
indiscretion.

Yep, you got what you deserve, so don't make matters worse....just pass.

You might get a bit more sympathy had your minors been reversed. :)

So you all start with 3, I didn't want to hide my nice 4 card spade suit.

I tanked, passed and went for 800, 6 was cold.

I feel for u :) Dbl would not have been my first choice either, but in pairs comp. its not totally out of question. U must have good reason if u hide 4 card suit.
With my regular prds we play raptor for this place, wheter or not it had helped i dont know.
Just out of curiosity what would XX by u had been?

3 instead of double - I plan on backing in with spades later if the auction allows, but my hand is primarily about clubs. Having misbid with X, there is no way of repairing the damage - partner has a right to expect a totally different hand type.

I am going to guess there are some posters who will bid or at least think about bidding 5c not x with 7-4...just a guess.

6C now, though this does depend on whom I am playing. Note that a good player will not x 5D if he cannot deferat other high denomination contracts as well. The double is a poor call.

Really? Good players must have a lot more experience playing against someone who would double with that hand, and then successully pull to a club slam than I have. Is it possible those same people would pull an undoubled 5D to 6C?

1. Jillybean asks "Here's hoping a little public shaming will help me remember...I don't know if you like the double, but that is what I chose."
IMO 3 = 10, _X = 8. I don't think double is so bad. I'm sure double would get some votes with worse hands like QJxx Qx Jxx AQJx. and you would still be worried about later developments.
2. Jillybean asks "What now?"
IMO Pass = 10, 6 = 6. Partner passed 1 so he may not be strong but he usually has a long suit to bid at the 5-level. He may expect more but what your suit lacks in length, it makes up in quality.

Yes, and after all a 4-card clubt suit and a 7-card club suit are basically the same thing. We all know that only majors count in this game anyway.

I always think with these patterns it is better to bid your suit first, you essentially always get a chance to double dome number of hearts. I would be delighted if the auction went 1h p 2h 3c 4h p p and now I could dble. Even 4126 I would bid clubs first unless they are poor. The auction never ends in 3C when you have 0-1 heart.

Given that you did double you are now in the nightmare scenario. No idea what to do. I always just pass in these situations on a "dont make it worse", but it never turns out to be the right decision. Or maybe that's my pessimism talking. :)

Well, agh, I don't klnow against whom you normally play, however good players will not double a non making contract unless they know other denominations are going down as well. For example, doubling 5D here on lets say QT9xx of Ds alone is absurd.

And you think the responder to the opening bid might have that? Check the context of the thread. I have raised 1H to 2H on, say:

KXX
JXX
QT9XX
XX

And the auction goes like it went; Is there some earthly reason I shouldn't double 5D? I could wait a very long time for my LHO to have a hand which will remove to a club slam and make it. And of those times, what percentage would he only run to a club slam out of fright because I doubled ---and would have bid 6C anyway?
