I have both majors, so I bid. I don't think two trump losers in 3♣ is going to be a big shock to RHO.

I think defending looks more promissing.
All the values I have work only in defense , and while we won't make game , and likely not even 3M (and who says I guess to bid the right one?) pd who bid so much is likely to provide at least 3 tricks , especially considering that I am short in his main suit.

Defend.
I have two tricks and partner must have 3 tricks. If his hand were not suitable for defending, he would have done something other than double twice.
My hand is not very good on offense in an 8 card fit, and it is not unreasonable to run into a 4-1 or worse break if I pick the "wrong" major suit.

Not close, with 2 sure trump tricks and a stiff in partner's suit.
I have to bid and make game to have any chance of doing better than defending. Not only does it seem wrong to force to 4M with zero working cards and at most an 8 card fit. Do we really need to bid 4♣ here? We can hardly guess a major ourselves, since partner may be 3451/4351 huge.

I have such a bad hand. My strength is in my singleton in partner's prime suit and three honours and another card in the opponents suit. I pass and expect them to go down.

Ok, cool, I defended and didn't think it was that close.
Pard has Qxx / AJxx / AKQxx / x, and I think it's pretty unlucky that declarer is KJx / Qx / x / AK98xxx. Just making sure I wasn't taking a huge position here.

I think it's pretty unlucky that your partner doubled a second time....sure, he has a good hand, but he has some compelling reason to think you don't...and his hand is hardly worth forcing you to bid at the 3-level when you've already passed twice. 100% blame on him.

Interesting, I chose to bid because I figured this is about what pard might have, and that 3♣x could conceivably make. Apparently I failed to understand just how strong a hand partner ought to have to bid this way. This thread may have saved me from doing this myself sometime.
