1N=15-17. 3x is natural.

1. Is there any reason to play X as anything but takeout?

2. Any reason to play 4x as anything but Michaels?

3. Should 3y be forcing or non-forcing? And does whether you are playing teams or pairs influence your thought on what is optimal?

Some would still play 4-level transfers, so that's one reason that a cuebid would not be Michaels. Also if the overcall is in a major, you might not want a cuebid to be Michaels. I'm not claiming anything about the merits of any of these treatments, only that some play them, and I wouldn't assume a cue is Michaels here without agreement with an unknown partner.

We've chatted offline about the other questions, so I'll let others offer their opinions.

Over 1NT - 3, I play that 4 level transfers are on. 4 is for the majors, but I wouldn't call it Michaels (probably just a quibble on my part). Double is negative, but can certainly be converted by opener.

Over 1NT - 3x other than clubs, 4 level transfers are off. The rest is the same.

Texas Transfers are ON through 3C interference:
1NT - ( 3C ) - 4D! = Texas
but:
1NT - ( 3D ) - 4D! is needed for Stayman
and
1NT - ( 3D ) - 4H = natural, not a transfer.

Of course there is. You might want to penalize opps. To use dbl as take out is a necessity, not an extravagance.

2. Any reason to play 4x as anything but Michaels?

You can come up with a dozen good meanings for 4x. But michaels is fine, of course.

3. Should 3y be forcing or non-forcing? And does whether you are playing teams or pairs influence your thought on what is optimal?

3y must be forcing. Otherwise it's just too dificult.

I play the same, except:
1NT-(3C)-3S=xfer to 3NT without stop, but that is probably just another naming of the same bid.
1NT-(3H)-DBL=Takeout; We play that (3H)-DBL is transfer S, like you play after (1NT)-3H so maybe it is logic if we would do the same.

I have one thing to add to Justin's suggestion: double should be game-forcing.
... that would still not be conclusive proof, before someone wants to explain that to me as well as if I was a 5 year-old. - gwnn
