I hadn't picked up on this before I saw some of the commentary at the Lederer yesterday but in case anyone else is unaware, Sheri is Captain and Fred is coach of the USA team at the Olympiad in Istanbul. Congratulations! - a great honour and well deserved.

I wish you both and your team lots of success but not too much B) as I shall be rooting for a European victory this time.

In the world olympiad,,, european victories are sort of the normal result....

Of the previous 11 events

France has won 4 times
Italy has won 4 times
Poland has won once

And only twice has non-european teams won
The USA won once, in 1988, and
Brazil won once, in 1976

I was looking over the rosters... I'm guessing that Italy is going to walk away with the prize this time arround.

A number of the European teams (Poland, Norway) are missing some of their stronger players.

Yes, Italy is probably an overwhelming favorite this
time, although they have disappointed their fans
more than once in the recent past.
However, without Hamman or Helgemo, it is difficult
to see who could stop them now.

I did not know about Fred and Sheri,
I wish them any luck. Bear in mind that
this US team has a strong European flavour, with
two ex-Europeans (three if we count Zia:-) in the
team.

Thanks for your good wishes, Denis and others.

Don't sell this USA team short. It is not unlikely that they will eventually face Italy in a knockout match and, in my view, it is also not unlikely that USA would win such a match.

If any of you are going to be in Istanbul. Please try to find Sheri and me (it shouldn't be too hard) and say "hello". Always (actually an overbid - usually more accurate) nice for us to meet BBO members in "real life".

There is a good chance that I won't be able to make any forums posts or respond to e-mail between October 20 and November 6. If there is something you really want me to see, I suggest you send or post it after November 6.

Or, rather than pile up stuff for poor fg, email it to poor uday@ instead.

Hi Fred,

when you are working with super-duper players, what does Team Captain and Team Coach entail?
