(4) given the club single, there is not a lot of interest in playing anything else

I have to admit, my thought process runs similarly to Don's and I am surprised so many are raising with 3D rather than 2S. My 2/1 auction:-

1H - 1NT
2D - 2S
3S - 3NT

Auction in preferred style:-

1H = 10-17 unbal, 5+ hearts
... - 2C = < invitational (~6-9), 4+ clubs, denies 4 spades
2D = nat
... - 2S = super-max diamond raise
3N

my guess is pard forgot about impossible 2spades here where he could bid 2s forcing 2nt and then 3c or 3d to show a good invite in c or d and a direct 3c or 3d over 2d which could show something weaker. An easy convention to forget on this deal.

it doesn´t take much imagination to place the cards in a way where 2♦ is a winner over 3NT, but I would also invite with south´s hand.

I would not like to be in 3NT on these hands.
After 1H - 3C (invitational) I think opener has a choice between passing and raising clubs.

As a double-dummy bidding problem, you want to play in either a club partial or in 5C, and this is difficult.
One possibility is for responder to ignore the diamond fit, and bid 1H - 1NT - 2D - 3C, assuming that 3C is constructive (which it would be for some people).

I have in my notes a tidbit from Fred G.... where you can improve on Responder's rebids when Opener has rebid 2D :

His suggestion ( I can't find the original thread ):
1H - 1NT
2D - 2S! ( either a good Club hand or strong Diam raise )
2NT! ( asks ) - ??
......................3C = good Club hand ( direct 3C over 2D would be a lesser hand )
......................3D = strong Diam raise

Just thinking out loud, let's say the 2S! always shows the strong Diam raise:
1H - 1NT
2D - 2S! ( strong Diam raise + something else )
2NT! ( what else? ) - ??
..............................3C = Club-stop(s), no Sp-stop
..............................3D = 5+ Diam or questionable stops
..............................3H = honor-x doubleton Ht
..............................3S = Sp-stop(s), no Cl-stop
.............................3NT = Cl & Sp-stop
