I don't know about anyone else, but 4S to me seems crazy with 3433 and no tricks outside spades.
Edit: may as well state this was in a best hand tourney.

North's response is pathetic, it should bid 3C or 2NT- its vul against not.
Give South a singleton spades and N-S can make 6C. Its a very desperate sacrifice by E-W but not too terrible given North's pass.

It will be investigated for improvements in shapes and min points while picking this fast arrivals.

3♣,3♦ are none forcing bids showing 7-9TP and length
2NT doesn't show minors, but invite for 3NT
but even 3♣ to be forcing, 11HCP and poor suit could be risky especially to partner having 4♠5♥2♦2♣ hand (after Michaels is not so unexpected both pairs to encounter misfit in their hands), would be better to Double 2♥, why it didn't would be checked.

The book bid for East is 2♠. It only jumped to 4♠ in 1 out of 11 of my simulations at IMPs, 2 out of 11 at MP. 3-3 in the minors implies a double fit, which probably explains the occasional jump.
If East had bid only 2♠ and then there were 2 passes, North would balance with 3♣. With your actual hand, I presume you would bid 3♥ over 2♠; in this case, North bids 3NT. Since 3NT makes, 4♠X-3 is a good sacrifice at this vulnerability (especially at MP, which explains the above disparity).

I was offering 2NT as natural. Double 2♥ probably says you have a simple hearts raise. Why not 2♠ as second best alternative.

Doubling 2♥ says you're interested in doubling them -- that's quite standard over Michaels and Unusual NT. If you have a simple ♥ raise, you bid 3♥. 2♠ is a cue bid showing an invitational or better ♥ raise.
GIB's description of 2NT is: Invitational to 3NT game -- 13 HCP; stop in S
I think the reason it's so strong is because it's HCP, not total points -- we don't want to count shortness points when inviting NT.
