Playing 2/1 I would pass and come in later with a 2 suited bid.
Of course I would prefer to be playing 2 suited opening bids.

Pass, then two suiter, would be a consideration if the diamonds were the longer suit. I chose 1 because it looks sort of like an opening bid with spades. 3S is not our style, but I can understand the reasoning of those who like it.
