You play a system like SAYC: you open 5 card M and 4 card ♦
After the bidding:
1♣-(Pas)-1♦-(1♥)-
DBL and 1♠ now both show 4-card spade? (..or do you only bid 1♠ with 6-5)?
What is the difference between them?
..And similarly:
After the bidding:
1♣-(Pas)-1♦-(1♠)-
DBL and 2♥ now both show 4-card Heart?
What is the difference between them?

Double is a ballanced hand. Partner can rebid a five-card diamonds.
1♠ is unballanced. Partner can give prfference to clubs on a doubleton.
If the overcall is 1♠, 2♥ would show extras so dbl can be either ballanced or unballanced.
Note that if partner bids 1♥, a double shows 3-card support and says nothing about the unbid suit, whether it's a minor or a major.

The world would be such a happy place, if only everyone played Acol :) --- TramTicket
