I know the east-west pair in this appeal. Their lead methods are 3/low against suits from both weak and strong holdings against suit contracts, and upside down suit preference trump leads. I would conclude that they actually received the six of spade lead, showing a decent holding in a higher ranking suit.

He has a point, and I should have read it - I was 13 pages behind, and it was a pdf I had to download, and since all the *rest* of the relevant information was in the OP, so I just guessed...Oops. Absolutely my fault.
