And, what is implied by East's pass over 1♦? Would an immediate 1♥ have shown extras?

Rebidding a 3card minor ok, it's a good 3 cards, but still...

I don't know what GIB thinks, but normally bidding over 1♦ shows a hand that opened light due to extra shape. The redouble suggests defending, but opener is saying that his hand is weaker and more offensively oriented than responder expects. With a strong shapely hand, opener passes the first time and then pulls partner's expected double. Click here and scroll down to lessons 33 and 34 for the standard followups to this redouble.
Also, West is unlikely to have a good 4-card heart suit when he redoubles, he could have bid 1♥ instead. So there's no reason for East to bid his anemic hearts.
Redouble means "this is our hand, we're either bidding something to make or doubling them." Since West didn't double 1♠, East has to bid something, and he's in a real bind. His spades aren't good enough to double 1♠, and he doesn't have a spade stopper for 1NT.
South's off-shape double really made life hard for the robots. I think this would be a good MSC hand.
