Shows spades generally. If not, the opponents will psych a 1 spade bid here.

If I were forced to pick between your two choices, then my answer would be:

I don't understand the functional difference between it being takeout or negative. They seem the same to me.

A takeout double is a negative double (and vice versa).

A penalty double is a positive double (a term one rarely encounters in the bridge literature but it does exist).

X here should show 4 spades and a 2S bid shows 5 spades. As the other responders have mentioned, a negative double is the same thing as a takeout double (and this is not one, although it is not exactly a penalty double either).

I would X with 5 rags and bid 2S with a more robust spade holding, but yeah same idea.

Sure, I didn't mean that *every* hand with 5 spades should bid 2 spades, just that the 2 spade bid showed 5.

Dbl is usually played as penalty oriented, showing s, because many players psych 1 in such auctions (read: the frequency of this being a psych is much higher than average). This guards against clowns. ;)

I hate stolen bids in general but this double is the only one that I play.
