BBO Forum,

I opened 1 spade today with:

S AKJTxx
H Axx
D AQx
C x

My partner responded 1NT with:

S Q
H Qxxx
D Kxxx
C xxxx

I palyed the stop card and bid 3 spades and my
partner passed. Makes an easy 4.

Since this was the last board one opponent asked to see
the hand and suggested that I could have bid 3 diamonds
which he called an "arificial jump shift".

I can't find anything about this bid on the internet.

Anyone know this bid?

Thanks for any response.

It is a normal jump shift. This can be made on a 3 card, sometimes even a 2 card, minor on occasion in order to establish a GF. There are also some artificial methods available to solve this issue.

If you don't want to bid 3, bid 4 instead. That's where you are headed anyway and the hand is too strong to rebid only 3.

I agree with Nigel. Your hand is worth 21 "Bergen starting points" and you have a very good suit that you want to be trumps. Partner's 1NT shows your partnership has enough for game, so just bid it.

This topic has been played out here on BBO many times.

You might check the replies to the following thread from 2009 ( I forgot to save the URL ):

Title: 2/1 and opener jump shifts ..

There was another more recent thread ( I can't find it ) that suggested an artificial 3C! jump shift:
1S - 1NT!
3C! - 3D! ( relay for Opener to further describe )
??
.. 3H! = 3C was actual 2nd suit
.. 3S! = 3C was artificial; have good 6+ card suit
( so this is the GF way to bid 3S as opposed to OP's direct 3S invite ).

Hi Jerry,

the first thing you need to understand here is that 1-1NT-3 is basically an invitational, i.e. non-forcing, bid. Your strength here is not invitational, it is game-forcing. So you need to make a game-forcing bid. Your choices in that range are a jump shift, a double jump (self-splinter), and just bidding game yourself.

To choose between these options you need to consider whether you already know what the final contract should be. If you know you want to play 4 (and I think that is a very reasonable view), then just bid it. If you need some more input from partner, you will need to find a bid below game. And that is where the jump shift comes in, and why you sometimes need to bid it on a suit of less than 4 cards.
