Having some trouble both with explanations and when to alert from people who've never played with alerts or standard bridge. With English, I can explain it. With other languages, I cannot.

I was wondering if a language 'cheat sheet' would be possible. It would be something on the order of:

(Club) = !C or Club
(Diamond) = !D or Diamond
(Heart) = !H or Heart
(Spade) = !S or Spade
(No Trump) = NT or No Trump
(Balanced) = Balanced
(Unbalanced) = Unbalanced
(Transfer) = Transfer
(Cue Bid) = Cue Bid

(These are the 'standard' meanings of openings. Alert if you use something different)
(1♣ = 3+ clubs, a point range within 11-21)

And so forth. All of which would fit on one page, not only allowing the player to alert and explain in an English world, but allowing him to figure out what other people's alerts and explanations mean.

Guess he means that if you type (Transfer) in a message each recipient should read his native language word for "transfer" instead.

I meant that you could print out this page, and when you wanted to say "transfer" you could see how to see it in English, and if somebody said "transfer" in English you could look at the sheet and see what they meant.

This way, you could play in a tournament here, alert when you should and explain in English (and understand other people's alerts) without knowing a word of English or having played in a club with alerts.

Why? Just use a translator like Altavista's Babelfish.

The chance that this will translate bridge terms correctly is fairly negligible IMO

the language of BBO is English, and therefore while not every player has to learn to speak English in full, they should learn enough terms to understand what a club, a diamond, a king, a transfer, etc is.
