2♠ shows 6-10 total points, and GIB has 11. Did he devalue his hand because of the 10-card trump fit? The most ridiculous thing is that the bidding at one table went p-1♦-dbl-2♦-3♠-p-4♠-p-p-p. GIB's hand is obviously worse opposite a takeout double than opposite a 1♠ overcall, the trump fit is worse and the ♦Q is more likely to be worthless.

GIB often makes a single raise with 5-card support of an overcall. What it usually does is wait for an opponent to reopen, and then it re-evaluates and keeps competing.

The other hand is:
If North counts his hand as 10 total points (not double-counting Q and shortness in ♦), both North bids fit GIB's structure. The question is why the structure requires 11 total points for a jump-raise after your ♠ bid but only requires 10 total points for the jump-bid over the double. Presumably, this is because the takeout double shows 12+ total points whereas the overcall can be done on 9+.

Well, someone should tell GIB that +200 is only a good score when you're getting it for 1NTx-1.
