If this is what you play, you should stop saying that you play SAYC (indicated in the subheading of this thread). You play some customized version of Standard American, but not SAYC.

For Hanoi, 1♣ would be deviation from system. His main systemic choices are 2N and Pass. If, systemically, 2N requires a balanced hand then Pass may be his best systemic option. :ph34r:

I don't think Mr. Hog is representing Standard American. He is talking about your choice that something is not forcing, which is different from his.

I do think that not-forcing for a 1S rebid is much more common than his (mine). I expect partner will take another bid after 1/1/1, and will rebid 1S on some damn good hands which are too balanced for a jump shift in our style (rather than rebid 2NT). But it is still o.k. if she dug up a response from crapsville and passes.

Given the agreements in the OP, I open 2NT unless partner will have a fit because I have a singleton. In that case, I open 1♣, planning to JS or reverse, or possibly splinter in ♦ over 1♠, if partner understands splinters.
