Playing in a team match, with an unfamiliar partnership but with an advanced partner, you hold AT98xxx Qxx Tx 9 and partner opens 1, which could be as short as 2 if it is a strong nt hand (all strong nt hands start 1, weak unbalanced hands with 5 clubs and 4 diamonds start with 1 diamonds, otherwise fairly standard 2/1 weak nt systems). Your RHO bids 1. Question 1, what is your call?

Assuming you pass, the auction proceeds pass, 1nt by partner which ostensibly shows a decent strong nt hand and in theory a spade stopper. Pass by RHO. Your call?

Now 4, which is what you'd have bid if RHO had passed. Don't be surprised if he has KQJx, though... nearly all the psyche-looking bids I've seen turned up to be honest!!

pass + 4 seems normal to me.

Pass first time is obvious.

I will use any method that gives partner a chance to declare spades, but I'm on my way to 4.

perhaps letting partner get away in partscore is a good alternative (3?), but for the shake of being clear on what we wanna play 4 is the most practice bid.

I thought of 3 as well, but I'm not sure this shows s.
