What say you? 1st seat NV
1D or 1NT

Prefer this to 1NT because if pard transfers, I lack entries to be able to enjoy the diamonds.

In the old days, we could break a transfer or Stayman with 2NT after opening 1NT to show a solid 6-card minor (no primes outside). But today, such action would throw a monkey wrench in the NT structure; so either open 1NT and behave, or open 1D and under-rebid 2D.
Probably just opening 1NT (15-17) would be our choice of least bad actions.

For instance, he doesn't like being used as a human shield when we're being shot at.
I happen to think it's a very noble way to meet one's maker, especially for a guy like him.
Bottom line is we never let that difference of opinion interfere with anything."

again rather deal with issues/prblems over 1nt.

I don't understand this, you're rebidding 2♦ at the form of scoring where bidding games matters a lot?
I open 1NT at both forms of scoring, but if someone twisted my arm into opening 1♦ I'd have a tough time not rebidding 2NT or 3♦ on this hand.

Vul I might open 1♦ , since 1NT can easily be down 3 or down 4.
Having opened 1D , I would rebid 2♦ , not 3♦.

1♦ followed by 2♦ seems like enough since pard knows the value of getting to an imp game too. If pard annoys me by bidding both majors, I might trot out 3♣ in an effort to endplay her into bidding 3nt.
What is baby oil made of?

I don't believe in opening 1NT 14-18 because of subjective non-quantifiable feel-of-the-hand considerations. At any rate, if anything this hand should be downgraded.

Yes, by opening 1N I may...not will....increase the chances that we are right-siding the contract, but using that as the deciding factor strikes me as an attempt to justify our desire to grab dummy.
I can see 1N as more plausible in a mp field, especially a weak one where I need to score a big game to win...the weaker the field, the higher the score one needs, so one has to take chances on zeros in order to accumulate tops.
And if the hand doesn't belong to us in game, I suspect that:
1) we'll want a diamond lead if LHO is on play
2) we'll want to compete in diamonds on many hands where they bid a major. While we can do that ourselves, after 1N, it is more of a guessing game, and easier for the opps to go right if they know we're balanced.
3) we're going to hate playing this hand in 1N when they run one suit then another, and we hope we can stop the 3rd suit
So put me down for the stodgy 1♦ (the thought of rebidding 3♦ makes me ill)

If you're going to hide the real reason, i.e. you want to hog the hand, you might as well use the textbook political quote I open 1♦ "for safety reasons"

Ive tried to find a a good game that i would reach after opening 1Nt but fail to reach after opening 1D but there is not too many of them.
Something like
AJTx
Jxx
xx
QJxxx
However i can see plenty of hands where a 2D rebid will send you into a better contract.
Rebidding 3D or 2Nt is a joke
