1) is double from North for take out, or penalties?

2) what do you choose to bid when 4S is returned to you?

1) Obviously it depends on agreements, but imo it's best to play this as takeout.

2) Dbl.

Double. Reminds me of the Levin-Weinstein mishap, a must read imo.
Please note: I am interested in boring, bog standard, 2/1.

Double should be TO here. That's what I'd do.

Also, he rates to not have a heart void when he leads the 3.

Double is for takeout, and that's obviously a sensible option, but I think 4NT deserves consideration too. I rarely seem to get good results from doubling with a void in this sort of position - partner always leaves it in, and we usually get 300 against a making game.
... that would still not be conclusive proof, before someone wants to explain that to me as well as if I was a 5 year-old. - gwnn

I prefer to play double as values and 4NT for take-out over 4S but I recognise that this is a minority position. As Free suggests the correct call will depend on agreements.
