Over 2, my choices included:
2: 3+S; 9-12 total points
3: 3+S; 16-19 total points
3: 4+S; 9-14 total points
4: 3+S; 9-19 total points

Either 2 or 3 should include hands with 3S and 13-15 total points.

Note: There will be another thread with this same hand to identify a declarer play problem.

Out of curiosity, what would double have shown?

Sorry, I didn't write that down, although I did look at the time. Of the 7 GIBs who faced my decision, 5 bid 2 and 2 bid 3, so I presume that double wasn't a better fit for this hand.

If I had a bid to show 3+ spades and 13-15 total points, I would not use it and show 16-19 total points instead. AAKK is the best possible 14 HCP you can have and all your points are outside the opp's suit, which is exactly where you have your small doubleton. Everything points to an upgrade.

Even if this hand is worth 16 total points, there still must be such a thing as a hand that values to 13-15 total points with three-card support; there should be a rebid that includes such a hand other than jumping to 4.

Oh sure, I wasn't disagreeing with that.

There are so many of these problems, I feel, that the bidding system is a horror and should be abandoned.

That's a gross overstatement. In many of these situations, the problem is merely one of documentation.

Double after the 2C would show 5+H, less than 2 spade, 14-17 HCP but <19 TP, "biddable clubs".
