Holding in 1st seat (matchpoints, NONVUL, ops VUL )

Axxx

AQxxxxxxx

Is 5d bid ok for some reasons, or is this hand too strong for it so only 1d ist a right bid?

Thx for comments

White versus red, I'd preempt without a second thought.

I suspect that I'd preempt 5, however, I have a (probably insane) desire to open 6

I don't know how to bid 9-4 hands :)

I can tell you I don't like opening 6 and I would like to bid 5 here, but I don't know if it's right at all.
... and I can prove it with my usual, flawless logic.

tactically 5 and 1 are both logical alternatives. At other colors my preference for 1 increases

I bet if you polled 100 respected players, you would get votes for every number of diamonds from 1 through 6 (except, perhaps, 2), and maybe an odd pass thrown in for good measure.

This hand is so bizarre. Opposite as little as xx xxxx xxx xxxx you have a cold slam in diamonds. But opposite xxx AKQJT --- AKQJT you can't make more than 9 or 10 tricks in diamonds and, on a really bad day, only 8 tricks in diamonds.

I have no idea what I would open on this hand. It is giving me a headache. :)

Bizarre hand with no real answer but I like 1 on these colours followed by 5 if pard shows no signs of life.

If the opps outbid that pard may be able to hammer them on the bad splits and soft cards. Much tougher to do if I open 5 especially if afraid they can run to spades.

Besides, maybe pard will bid spades and I can pull out a 5nt bid.

Yep, not sure I would think of that at the table. If pard shows spades after my 1D opening, I will feel very well-placed. If pard bids spades over my 5D opening, I will have fallen out of my chair.

edit: This might qualify under "Interesting Bridge Hands".

Last 4-9 hand I saw, oppo opened it with his "exactly 4 spades and a longer minor" bid :)

Not unhappy with 1 or 5 at this vul, wouldn't consider 5 at any other.

IMO 1 = 10, 5 = 7. 6 = 5, .....

Just a story, recently in a live bridge game I was dealt Axxx AKQTxxxxx void void. I opened 1H and my partner responded 2D, and we couldn't make game in any strain.
