Also, he rates to not have a heart void when he leads the 3.

No blame here imo, the nebulous 1 showed why it's a weak point in the system and the vulnerability convinced West not to play 5m in a 9+ card fit (East won't have a balanced hand, so 0-1, usually 4, so either 4-4m, 5-3m or 5-4m).

I can't blame West because there's no way for West to know they have a 5-5 fit. 'Sacrificing' in 5 may be an aweful decision (4 may easily go down on ruffs for example), nobody knows it's on a finesse. East can't do anything else either, he has done his job with Double.

Free is absolutely correct. When you decide to play a strong club system, there are some drawbacks that you have to accept. This is one of them.

System is entirely at fault here.

I agree, this is a system loss. It is avoidable, however.

It's valuable to play some method by which West can show the minors over 1D (1H), and especially so when 1D is nebulous. For example, you can play that double over 1D (1H) shows a minor-oriented hand, and that 1S shows 4+ spades (or the reverse).

You'd still have a problem on the auction 1D (1S) with the example hands with hearts and spades swapped, as you need double to show hearts. You could do something like play 3C as both minors, preemptive. Whether you deem the West hand good enough for that at this vulnerability is up to you.

This is absolutely crazy, west has an obvious bid over 4H, and it is not a save, it is to make. I mean east had an absolute yarb for this auction with the wasted SK and we're still on a hook, and they often make also... The nebulous diamond didn't matter after east Xed 2H.

Imagine if east had his bid and had a heart void or a good/useful hand. West can make slam opposite very little. Double game swings galore. Etc etc.

But yeah, change your system so that west can bid with that hand.

Care to elaborate? How shall the system be changed in order to make west bid?

people are presuming that the reason west didn't bid over 1 is that you're playing 1 showing 5+ and double showing 4. if so, this method is a luxury you can't afford in precision and you need to play 1 spades shows 4+ and double shows the minors (or vice versa)

Passed hand to pre1D didn't expect clubs so 2C over 1H?
This bid doesn't even show a maxpass.
