Oh. What was he supposed to do, then? Wait for me to balance?

I have no idea why Lurpoa chose to downvote a followup question by the OP in the beginner-intermediate forum, but that does appear to be her mode of operation.

oh look! this post also got voted down by Lurpoa. What a surprise!

Bummer, I was hoping the bump was someone telling me "oh yeah, so in retrospect you did great to pass the double" ;)

It's sort of annoying to have to dig through the whole thread to reconstruct p's hand, but, if my abacus served me right, p was something like:
AQxxx, xxx, x Axxx
?
It is, of course, a clear 1 overcall, but (and I might be resulting here) I think doubling 2 is a little much.

I agree with this post. I do not see the point of doubling 2D on this hand. Overcaller heard the 1NT bid; overcaller heard the fact that I did not raise Spades; overcaller heard three suits bid; overcaller has 3 small cards in Hearts - the worst possible holding you can have; overcaller does not have a lot extra - even with the better hand of AKJxx of S, pass seems totally obvious.
By the way, I would also opened 1H to get both suits in.

I very much doubt I downvoted a n00b asking a question.

And how does partner know later that your diamonds are longer than your hearts?

She doesn't. However that is far better than reversing and lying about my strength.
If you open 1D, what are you going to bid over 1S? 2H? That shows a much better hand than you have; I think you would be forced to bid 2D. I would much prefer to lie about 1 card than about the general strength of the hand.
Look at these two auctions:
1D (P) 1S (P)
2H
This shows about a 17+ count and at least 5D-4H. Now how and when are you goig to show the 5th heart? Are you going to lie about extra strength?

1H (P) 1S (P)
2D
This shows at least 5H and 4D and about 12-16. Now I can repeat Ds to show the 5th and not lie about having extra strength.
No doubt some will disagree, but I feel strongly about this. I suspect Fluffy and Whereagles would agree with me.

If I open 1 and hear 1, I will rebid 2 since I have a six-card suit and minimum values. I agree missing a 5-3 heart fit is bad especially in matchpoints, but I don't understand how the proposed solution works. Currently if my partner bids 1 and 2 over my response, I would give preference to his first bid suit unless I have two more cards in the second suit. In this case, that would land us in a 5-1 fit instead of our 6-2. Is there a way to overcome this? Is it rare enough to not matter?

I don't mind playing in a 5-2 fit at the 2 level. Playing in a 5-1 is a rara avis indeed. Try to construct hands where this will happen....you won't come up with many where responder would not have bid 2S or 2NT raised Ds or passed a 2D bid and also where the opponents have not intervened.

Thanks. I'll discuss this with my partner.
