GIB and I are going through a rough patch Bidding a suit after opening 1NT

Our real disaster when I look at it I realise was my mistake but:

P P P 1NT
P P 2C* 2D
P 2S P P
* one suited hand

Surely after opening 1NT with no bid from my partner if I make a free bid at the 2 level I am promising a five card suit. Gib had 3 diamonds to the King and four spades to the King so why bid spades? For the second time tonight GIB is playing spades in a 4-2 fit.

Why on Earth do you say this is your mistake?

Edit: Well, okay, you know GIB doesn't have a 5-card major. So, he is giving you a choice of raises? Maybe he wouldn't make this bid without diamond support?
