Is it possible to only join tournaments for beginners? I don't want to randomly get over my head.

Tournaments for beginners

The Beginner/Intermediate lounge, a private club within the BBO, runs regular beginner tournaments. Look for the club on line and find out when they run their events. I don;t know if you have to join the club to play in their events or not, but the club is not free. I think they charge a minimum amount. They also provide daily free lessons to club members.

The Express tourneys are ok for beginners... chat is not allowed, so even if you mess up nobody can scold you

For the sake of your development, that is the absolute best thing you could do. There is nothing worse than playing only against other novices, it will defiantly ingrain all kinds of bad habits. Will you lost a lot at first? Sure, but give it some time...

I actually think the Express events are a bad thing for beginners. There's no need for beginners to have time pressure to bid and/or play. And, many players hide behind the fact that they can't be scolded and bid very strangely. Beginners would be better off joining one (or more) of the clubs that run frequent tournaments: BBO Fans, BBO Hornets, Bridge for Fun (B4F or B4F2).

In my experience, some of the worst bridge you'll ever see is played in the free express tourneys. It's not a good place for novices to learn.

OK, you all make a very good point that the Express tourneys are not a good place to learn. However, the way i understood the OP question, it was simply "where can i play without bugging anyone".
There are plenty of methods to learn and build sound bridge habits. I doubt any of them involves joining tourneys (ANY tourneys) without a regular partner.
So the Express tourneys are:
- numerous
- free
- not restricted
- short
- rudeness-proof.
There are obviously lots of disadvantages, but it's a convenient solution for someone who is simply looking to play a few hands.
