Tonight the reigning World Champions were knocked out of the Bermuda Bowl qualification by team JLol's team. Congrats to a strong performance guys! I did get worried after 6♣X = but you stuck in there, well done!

After such a tough and big victory it is easy to relax, feel satisfied and "done". This is horrible for the next round. You have to focus and go for the top.

I have had problems with "I've done enoguh" in the past, but I suspect Justin has more than enough killer instinct to overcome this feeling and it shouldn't be a problem for him. Dunno his teammates though.

FYI, there's already a long thread about the Trials up in the General Bridge Forum. Justin's victory has been a hot topic in the thread.

That's exactly what I told my team. Our only goal is to qualify for the bermuda bowl. Right now the score is 0-0 in a 120 board match. Time to grind.

Dunno if "forum guys" is the right description; Justin may have enough forum posts for a whole team, but the rest of the guys aren't exactly regulars here.

Anyway, congrats and good luck in the next rounds.

Hey for all that I know, 655321 could be on that team as well :)

I saw a couple of segments yesterday vs Wolfson and the Bathurst team seemed extremely solid. While Barthurst was competing most of the time to the correct level and collencting IMPs from downs on both sides, good saves, better games etc. Wolfson got most of his IMPs from declarer's missguesses like wooldridge 1NT XX, Grue's 3NT when he picked the wrong squeeze after a missdefence, or the 6♦ where the trump queen was missguessed.

I also wonder why Justin picked the wrong card to switch from ♣KJ82 when dummy had ♣104, Woosley comentated it could be a mind game with declarer but this is beyond me I'm afraid.

Ha, I wish, all these guys are way better than me though.

Anyway no disrespect meant to the Diamond team but I will be rooting for team JLogic :)
That's impossible. No one can give more than one hundred percent. By definition that is the most anyone can give.

I switched to a low club because:

A) I didn't know if Joe had 5 hearts or not. If Joe was 4513, my only shot to beat it is if he has 9xxxx of hearts and AQx of clubs (then the surrounding play is not so smart). Joe led the 3 of hearts, and Wolfson made the good play of hiding his 2, which I was not sure hw ould always do. This was all consistent, it gave LHO a 12 count that I knew he had, and from 5 to the 9 we do lead 4th, not 2nd, by agreement.

B) If joe was 4414, the club jack still only wins when he has the C9 also. On top of that, if declarer has Qxx of clubs, they might well pop Q, figuring that a good player would always shift to the jack if they had it. This is the "mind game" woolsey was referring to probably.

So, to sum it up, playing a low club only works badly when Wolfson has falsecarded at trick 1, partner has the C9, and Wolfson does not pop CQ on the low club back. Meanwhile, it caters to partner having xxxx 9xx32 x AQx. So I thought my play was percentage, but perhaps it was an error.

And as an added bonus for a mindgame, declarer should possibly pop Q from Q9x if he has it sometimes on a low club back, since I don't know he doesn't have the 9, so with the jack I'd still be playing the jack...etc etc. But I will confess I was thinking more about AQx with partner, and less about mind games, though I did hope that Wolfson would pop Q as my backup plan.

Also on hand 96 I love how wooldridge bid the hand, he had

♠Jx
♥A9xx
♦KQ109
♣Qxx

1♠-1NT
2♦-??

He foresaw a problem in at least one rounded suit after the right lead and decided to give up on NT game. Not sure if his system has any other implications other than the usual 2/1 (where partner will not have 3-3 in the minors). But he first downgraded the hand to invitational values (maybe his system allows for weaker than standard opening values) and focused on spades bidding 3♠ and getting to the top spot of the hand.

partner had ♠AQ10xx ♥Kx ♦AJxx ♣10x, I think 4♠ might only be beated with an inmediate lead of a club honnor from ♣KJ8x

Yep, Joel was super money on that hand. He is not afraid to take views, and they usually work out for him!

My regular partner does that sort of stuff (taking anti-nt views) all the time but he only gets them right half the time, LOL.

I keep telling him to do stuff by the book but it's hopeless, ahah.

Ok, now you can actually relax and celebrate :), cheers.

Out of curiosity, who won the afterthough about the meaning of 1♦-1♥-X-p-2♦-p-p-X?

Joe claimed he knew it was a penalty X and pulled anyways...Whatever, our agremeent is definitely that it shows 0-1 spade and that it's penalty (with 2 spades and some values we XX first).

Fluffy - the auction was really:

(1♦)- 1♠-(X) - p
(2♦) - p - (p) - X*
(pass) - 2♥ - (p) - p
(dbl) - AP

This one surprised me. I discussed this with Haspel at length, and said, "are you kidding, he's the one thats always preaching these low level doubles are takeout".

It also seems to me that if the overcaller doubles 2♦, then that is takeout, which should confirm that this double is also TO. I would expect the double to show something like: Kx QTxx xx Kxxxx.
