Why can't GIB ask for Key Cards? With a void somewhere, I can totally see GIB bidding 5♠ over the Texas transfer, but otherwise that bidding sequence is horrible and I'm just lucky that it made.

Sorry, but KQ109 is clearly worth 6+ HCP, which would make my total 15+ (KR evaluates my hand as exactly 15). Also, the 5♠ bid should show a hand that is really worried about the trump suit, which wasn't GIB's hand at all. I figured that Qxx was better than I could have. matmat, why do you always seem to say stupid things to try and put other people down? Don't let the door hit you on the way out...

because it is fun, and accurate more often than not to do so, and in this case because you imply that gib is clueless about bidding ("as usual") when your calls aren't really all that great either.

i guess K+R got crowned the be-all and end-all of hand evaluation at some point?

OK so I can see opening this 1N, especially in a GIB tournament. I would never do it or try to justify it in real life, but with GIB we all relax a bit. The accept of 6♠ is ridiculous.

K&R is an evaluation tool, not a god. Besides, since when was Qxx the best trump holding? While I don't agree with GIB's bidding here, if I had to place any blame for a bad result on this board, it would be 100000% you.

I agree with everything matmat said... Accepting the invite is absurd. Complaining about GIBs bidding after doing something like that is simply laughable.

That isn't relevant at all. The OP was about GIB's bidding. Surely the GIB issue would have been the same if South had a jack more and/or if South hadn't accepted the slam invite.

Yes, this is the GIB forum, where we should post observations to help the programmers improve GIB, regardless of whether the human partner upheld his end of the partnership. However, if OP refrained from gratuitous snarky comments, he wouldn't have them thrown back in his face.

I'm curious about the description provided for the 5♠ bid: "6+S; 5- 8421HCP in S; 17+ total points". Opposite a 15-17HCP 1NT opener, that description doesn't really look like "slam invite". Ignoring the point that the actual North hand should want to RKC, what responses would this 5♠ bid be designed to elicit?

GIB tends to bid 5M when it has a poor trump suit, but good controls elsewhere (or it assumes you have them, perhaps because you opened 2NT or 2♣); I've seen it do this with Jxxxxx or worse. You need excellent trumps support to raise it to slam, not just Qxx.

I took the bid as basically GSF. Even though I was wary of not having strong enough trump, I needed a 6-level contract for Bridge Bingo so I took a chance. I feel that GIB should ONLY use 5M if it's only worried about trump, otherwise ask RKC, like the hand above. Sadly, I didn't actually need 6♠, as two hands later I had a cold 6♥.
