If modern bidding manuals ever got this far, how do you think they would advise people to play the following:

(1) a repeat of the fourth suit, e.g.:

1♥ - 2♣
2♦ - 2♠
(anything) - 3♠

(2) a jump in the fourth suit (except 2♠)

1♥ - 2♣
2♦ - 3♠

Possible hands you might want to cover with such bids are:

(a) natural, minimum hcp but fair playing strength
(b) natural, strong and GF
© cue-bid (or specifically splinter), agreeing the last-bid suit by partner

Do you have any strong views, or other possible uses?

The first depends on anything, the second auction is a splinter but it depends on the specific auction.
Please note: I am interested in boring, bog standard, 2/1.

#1 Asking for a half stopper, the 2-suiter can be shown by kumping direct to 3S.
#2 see game forcing 2-suiter

This is of course not the only interpretation.

Well, I'll tell you what we play, although I'm not claiming it's obviously right or best.

1) A repeat of the fourth suit is natural and forcing if opener bid NT, otherwise it is 're-fourth-suit' showing a good hand that still doesn't know what to bid.

1H - 2C
2D - 2S
2NT - 2S = 5 spades and 6 clubs

1H -2C
2D - 2S
3C - 3S

opener is likely to be 2=5=4=2 or 1=5=4=3, responder might, say, have a 3=2=2=6 game force with Axx in spades; if opener is 2=5=4=2 with Qx of spades he'll bid 3NT, if he is 1=5=4=3 then 5C/6C will be the spot.

2) A jump in the fourth suit is natural iff opener has opened 1D and rebid 2C. 1D - 1S - 2C - 3H is non-forcing, at least 5-5 (usually 6-5); 1D - 1H - 2C - 3S is forcing 5-6.
Otherwise a fourth suit jump is usually a splinter for partner's second suit.

3)
Before we played transfer responses to 1C, we used to play that
1C - 1D
1H - 1S

= fsf for 1 round, opener raises to 2S with 4 of them

1C - 1D
1H - 2S
= invitational(+) hand with 3 clubs. Allows you to play in 2NT opposite a 4=4=1=4 or a 3=4=1=5 with short honours, and makes slam investigation easier by responder on this shape.

This in the context that 1C - 1D - 1H denies a balanced hand, so a spade fit is very rare.

Repeating the fourth suit means you really do have the fourth suit (and more of the first suit you bid).

This is usually a splinter for the second suit. Opener rebids 3NT if he doesn't truly have the suit he bid, he was making it up cause he couldn't think of a better rebid. Any other bid but 3NT sets diamonds as trump.
