Just curious as to the styles out there...
If no one comes from the future to stop you from doing it then how bad a decision could it really be?

I have a 1 opening so I bid 1. The suit isn't good enough to open 1, and I don't like to bid 1 on such hands because partner will consider it to be a 4 card suit. If you'd reverse the minors there's a case to open AKx instead of the xxxx because 1 openings are on a 3 card much more often.

1, because it's a good lead-director B-) (This is an important issue in 3rd suit openings.)

Won't bid 1 and 1 on a bad 4 card suit seems a bit of a stretch to me.

Pass.

I would open 1 if the spades were better, but opening either minor is more likely to lose than gain. 1 has zero (actually negative) preemptive value, I don't want them led and it will be hard to compete successfully in clubs. 1 has some lead direction value but this may well be a competitive partscore hand and we will want to play in our best suit.

+1. Also, after opening 1m I'm not sure what to do if partner responds 1H.

easy one club

If pard responds 1h...easy 1s, no problem yet.

Partner will expect this hand, this is a very common hand given the bidding so far.

btw a more unexpected hand might be:

AKxx...x...Qxx....AKxxx

In third seat, I'm opening 1. I will pass partner's response (even 1) and take my chances. I feel like we have one bite at the cherry and I want to get across my diamonds. I would rather pass than open 1.
