I'd probably have bid 3♠, but I certainly see the merit of double. Now I think I'm well-placed for a 3N call.

I chose to double because I thought 3S would endplay partner if he didn't have a spade fit.

agree with double, and now if partner opens very light I would pass, we have no real source in 3NT, if partner opens sound I would give 3NT a try.
