This slam looks to be about 8% (3-2 trumps and one ruff in spades to drop a single or doubleton K):

Who do you think is to blame for overbidding? We'll ignore the fact that I (East) misplayed it and went four off. :)

Are you playing SAYC, 2/1, or something else?

I blame West more, lack of a 4th trump and a void in partner's first suit should really tell him to consider going low. I think East should just bid 5♥ over 5♣, one slam try is enough.

EDIT: miscounted spades, playing for Kxxx with south still seems better than K(x) though.

Does 2♥ rebid show 5? Usually its 4. 100% blame to East for continuing- West jumped to game so its weak fit- 3♦D as a strong force was surely available. East's hand lacked fit in clubs and hearts quality. Is 3♥ a weak raise?

Slam is not THAT bad. Even on a D lead, you can hope that the ruffing finesse in S works. I wouldn't want to be there, but I have been in worse that made.
The 4H bid is very poor. 3C looks an obvious continuation to me.

2H showed 4 hearts, so 4H also shows 4 hearts.
Please note: I am interested in boring, bog standard, 2/1.

Uh yes? I don't know if this was aimed at me. 4H would also show 4H, not 3 as in this hand. 4H is a very poor bid indeed.

No not at all. It seemed like the most important comment on the bidding here, so I said it for the benefit of the poster.

Fair enough.

90% East. 4♥ was bad, but wasn't the fatal mistake. East needs to know when to quit.

Agree with the hog. This used to be a good slam for me until I switched to de-caf.

4♥ started the rot along with thew 5♣ continuation. Slam is pretty good opposite a 4th trump so my contrary opinion is 100% West.

I could see myself missing game entirely after an invitational jump shift from west. Maybe with 5-5 in the majors the East hand can't risk passing 3C, I don't know.

Thanks for replies all. Should have said it's matchpoints and an ACOL system (weak no trump, 4cM) sorry. 2H does indeed only promise 4 (though can of course have 5).

I was East and did get a little too excited after the jump to 4H :) I agree that only 1 cue bid would have been enough. Then again, I agree with those of you saying that 3C would be a better bid from West, after which the auction is likely to continue 3H-4H-pass. Also I don't think that West should accept the slam try given he's already overstated his trump length and has no spades and barely any entries.
