I cut partner some serious slack and only call 3 but have no problem with those who would rather call 4

I would bid 3, but that is partly because I raise with 3 somewhat frequently. If we are playing a style where we basically always have 4 for a raise, then I think it is close, and would probably only bid 2.

Definitely 3 and I think it is not close to either 2 or 4. Maybe closer to 2 if you are playing weak NT but I would still bid 3.

Given that xxxx Jxxxx Ax Jx is a good game, albeit it with a perfect fit, 3H is about right. A useful gadget is that 2S is either natural, a balanced raise to 3H, or a 3D bid with 3-card heart support. These are awkward hands, and the low frequency of the natural 2S makes it logical to take some of the load of other hand types. Parnter also now knows that 3H is distributional, and that helps him when considering whether to bid on.

Amazed to see a number of people calling this a 2½ hand.

For me it's a tip-top maximum for 3. Swap the SJ with a spot card in any of the other 3 suits and I would try 3 splinter. I would consider 3 on the actual cards agressive but not insane. Recall the 1m-1S-2S-4S hand from last week for an example of where the cutoff between the 2M and 3M raise is.

Disclaimer: my 1 responses are never on ugly 3-HCP hands.

Agree with fluffy, this is a totally down the middle 3H bid. We have 14 HCP and a stiff jack, that's about 17 points which is exactly what 3H shows. 2H is too few and 3S is too much.

14 points = 2H
5 losers = 4H

Take an average: 3H :)

3H is what I'd bid. Hand is too weak for a SPL (but not by a lot - say the DQ) and definitely too weak for 4H, but way too good for just a wimpy 2.

3H.

Having 2S av. as a minisplinter would be nice, 2S as minisplinter
would assume 1S to be forcing.
