I've never had a director, club or otherwise, warn me not to upset opponents by calling him. Nor, as a director, have I ever given such a warning. And I would be very surprised if that were ever to change.
I had a director warn me in the finals of the red ribbons after I called in a tempo UI/MI situation and the opponents got very upset. It turned out there was (correctly) no damage/adjustment even thought the opponents ended up in a great spot and got a great score. For me, possibly similar to wyman, if a situation comes up where things are unclear I find it easier to call the director and mentally move on. When I don't call the director it is too common that I think about the board in question for the next couple of rounds as I try to figure out if there was some UI or if the opponents action was reasonable.
