(3) - p - (p) - X
( p ) - 4

What about

(3) - p - (p) - X
( p ) - 4N

What do you bid in the second auction when you have Jxx Ax AJ AQT9xx. We are 4th seat.

I'm confused.

If the 3 bidder is my partner I bid 4 the first time. If I am the doubler I would have bid 3NT instead.

1. Two places to play; presumably 4 and a minor.

2. Both minors.

3. (Assuming I'm 2nd seat) 6, but probably wouldn't have passed 3.

Well the auctions show
(i) 2 places to play (but not the minors) so and a Minor
(ii) the minors
( I am not allowed to use ( followed by b followed by ) lol - it produces a funny face).

I have an identity crisis - who am I
bidding 4 if pard opened 3 seems normal so I am therefore not the partner of the 3 opener.

4 or gambling with 3N if the bidding has gone
(3) - p - (p) - to me ... so I am not the doubler

Perhaps I pulled out the 3 card by mistake and I am the opener ;)

I need another drink lol.

If 4H is 2 places to play why is 4N the minors?

In the first auction,I think the starting premise would be something like precisely 4 spades and game values and a resting spot in a minor if doubler can't bid 4.

Most good hands with 5+ spades, that couldn't overcall, would settle for a value-showing 4 over the double.

He may hold something different (and stronger yet unable to act directly over 3, thus making the range of hands narrow) but that's not our concern as doubler when we act now. BTW, 4N over 4 would be? I think it is classically a hand too strong to balance 3N.

On the second hand, we're in the unusual position of not being able to tell which seat we are in even tho we have the auction and the hand. I wouldn't have reopened with a double.....people have been known to advance this type of double on a 3 card spade suit! Kxx xxxx xxx xxx? 4 or 3? Or pass?

I would have reopened 3N....

Assuming I doubled, I would take 4n as minors, gf, and I like my hand (to put it mildly) Grand is possible and I don't think partner is allowed to commit to diamonds, so I would try 5 and bid 6 over either 5 or 5N....if he has A xx KQxxx Kxxxx I hope he can evaluate for grand.

Maybe the direct 4NT should be longer diamonds, with 4-4-4NT being equal length and 4-4-5 being longer clubs?
... that would still not be conclusive proof, before someone wants to explain that to me as well as if I was a 5 year-old. - gwnn

Sorry, we are in 4th seat. We reopened with a X. Partner responded 4N. Fixed it now.
