Four of the 10 Souths chose to pass after the double. Personally, I think (without a 4-card major) 2♦ should show a ♦ holding, redouble should show good ♣ and pass should show a lack of any of the above.
Conceding that I might have confused North, I don't think GIB gave a good explanation of North's next call: "rebiddable ♠; 10-12 total points; forcing". I'm frequently puzzled by GIB's definition of "rebiddable".
I think 3♠ should be Smolen. If I had bid 2♦ over the double, would Smolen have been on?
