WestGIB finds himself in 5dbld.
J led, won by K.
ruffed on dummy.
A.
to K.

At this point, declarer has 4 tricks and is able to run 5 more and 2 more for 11 easy tricks. Instead, he leads 6 to 9 losing to 10 and goes down 2.

Apparently, GIB thinks that a J lead ALWAYS shows the 10, never simply a doubleton. Please explain to him otherwise.

I don't think it believes it always shows the 10, but frequently does. And since a successful finess means a doubled, vulnerable overtrick, it's not totally inconceivable to play for this.

While not totally inconceivable, it does seem pretty bad. Occasionally the T is falling under the A and Q, and the difference between down two vulnerable doubled and making doubled vulnerable is significantly more IMPs than the difference between doubled vulnerable making and doubled vulnerable making with an overtrick.
