1)
1 - pass - 2 - 3
pass - pass - dbl = ?

2)
1 - pass - 2 - 3
pass - pass - dbl = ?

I am not sure and my friends seem to disagree on this one so I need some opinions :)

The furthest away from that I'm willing to go is 'cooperative'

btw I hope it's clear why 1st and 2nd are different :-)

If you play maximal double (do you ?) then you need t/o double in 2nd to be able to penalize them if trump stack is behind their suit.

Traditionally these were penalty oriented, but never pure penalty given that we are under the overcaller.

These days I expect the popular usage is extra values with a desire to compete or defend depending on opener's preference. Say, on the first hand, something like Qxx AJxx Qxxx xx. Definitely convertible.

I have agreed these to show a maximum balanced 3-card raise. You can translate that as "as close to penalty as they come, without being called Penalty"
Same as 1S(P)2S(P)P 3C. And if they balance with a Dbl, then Rdbl is the maximum balanced 3-card raise.

Opener is allowed to pull with a hand unsuitable for defending.

I think 1S (P) 2S (3C) P (P) is different from 1S (P) 2S (P) P (3C). In the first sequence, if opener truly has a hand that is unsuitable to defend, he probably would have already "pulled" to 3S earlier.

Penalty.

I might not describe them as penalty opposite a partner who believes that 'penalty' means pass regardless of your hand and the context of the auction.

Agree with maximum balanced 3 card raise with good offense and good defense. I guess it matters if youre playing imps or MP but I would not be willing to pass out 3H with xxx Ax Axxx Qxxx, and just bidding 3S is pretty dumb.
