Check out West's play at Trick 8, having already taken 5 and lost 2...

GIB failed to make a safety play at trick 8.

To be honest, GIB's play doesn't seem so unreasonable to me. Leading the J only loses if North has a void in clubs. Leading the J picks up an overtrick if North has KTxx or KTx and GIB finesses the T. Given that North has already shown up with a singleton spade, I have a lot of sympathy for West's action.

It also seems likely that in GIB's simulations, there were no instances where North had a club void.

On a semi-related question...does GIB play to maximize TRICKS or the score?

4S was played by 8 WestGIBs, although this was the only one not doubled. Six Wests who were doubled made their contract because they took the safety play to guarantee the contract at Trick 8.

I was at the eighth table. http://tinyurl.com/36e9x8a
We got to Trick 8 also at 5-2 tricks, but I was holding the winning Q. My West took the safety play to guarantee down 1 instead of leading the J to give himself a chance to make his contract.
