As much as gib does have AKJ9 in the suit I transferred into, should it ever be bidding grand here? For starters, there's no reason we're not off a red ace (missing at most 8 HCP), and even if we're not, there are plenty of hands where grand isn't great (reverse my red suit holdings).

GIB received an invitation. Since he didn't pre-accept the transfer, he has just about the best hand he could possibly have. Do you want him to only accept the grand invite when his 16HCP are the four aces? Maybe RKC might be helpful after you find out he has support, since you know there are 3 keycards missing.

The impression I get is that 5NT simply asks partner to choose between 6S and 6NT (or 6x with a decent 5 card suit) and not an invitation for grand. Maybe I'm wrong about it, but still seems wreckless (5NT described as 5S 16-20 HCP).

What I'm saying is I don't think Gib should ever bidding grand here, almost feels like 1x-1y-1NT-4NT-7NT.
