Hi all,
Friday begins the US Open Team Trials for USA Open team 1 for the 2011 BBowl.
http://usbf.org/index.php?option=com_conte...d=31&Itemid=284

What systems are top US players playing today?

2/1 or standard, no transfer responses or weak NT: 36
Meckwell precision openings, mostly with meck lite responses: 16
2/1 or standard, transfer responses to 1C, strong NT: 7
2/1 or standard, weak (12-14 or less) NT: 3
other: 2

Preempt styles ignored (rarely matter, nor can they be played in most events in the US).

Thanks,
Dan

Thanks Dan!

Interesting to see that 7 pairs are playing transfer responses to 1C. Among those 46 "2/1 or standard" pairs, I would like to see how many:

- Play that 2/1 is 100% GF, almost GF, or not GF.

- Play that 1C can be a doubleton.

I may have time to look it up myself later.
and the result can be plotted on a graph.

Well, following the logic ...he must be an idiot who doesn't know squat about bridge :o The thing most see about Flannery is just the bid itself not its fit into an overall system where it may (or may not) solve several other bidding problems by the failure to use the bid.

Coincidentally, next week we also see the start of the European Team championship (also counts as Bermuda Bowl qualification). 39 teams. Perhaps comparison statistics can be made <_<

I don't think there's anything remotely Polish about the Harris-Morgan methods. Nor is it an inversion of anything, except possibly common sense.

On the subject of top players playing poor methods, I don't think there's anything surprising about it. Most people play methods that they're comfortable and familiar with; and most world-class players will still get world-class results regardless of their methods.

Look at the French, for example. Nobody outside France thinks that Standard French is any good, but their top players don't seem to have any difficulty with getting good results playing it.
... that would still not be conclusive proof, before someone wants to explain that to me as well as if I was a 5 year-old. - gwnn

Harris / Morgan have been playing together for awhile, although not as much over the last several years. I agree the system looks very thrown together, but I'm sure they get some system swings on certain hands. More importantly, they are well practiced, which makes up for some fundamental systemic weaknesses.

Flannery is not bad when it comes up. The completely unknown hand gets to declare, and opener/responder are very well placed in competitive situations since they have described 9 cards with their first bid as opposed to 5.
