Scoring: IMP

I was South.

At our table, the bidding went

RHO Me LHO My P
1 Pass 1N (F1) Pass
2 X 3 5
All Pass

5 went -1.

At the other table, the bidding was a different as South overcalled 1NT
RHO Opps LHO Opps
1 1N Pass 3N
All Pass

The opening lead was 9. And declarer easily scooped 9 tricks.

I am not sure if I should overcall 1NT, and do you agree with the 3NT bid over partner's 1NT? Of course, a H lead may have defeated the contract.

Any opinion?

I guess you can make 9 tricks on a spade lead.

So you are trying to assess blame in reaching an excellent 5 that failed because the A was not with the opening bidder instead of reaching a tenuous 3N that should go down every time with the correct defense?

I also realize that 5 can be beaten when spades and 6-1 but this is something not to get worked up about.

They should make the winning lead every time? Ok...

Spades are 6-1 a lot of the time but it's "nothing to get worked up about"? I guess because they always make the winning lead vs 3N so it's a 0 % contract!

I agree that getting to 5C instead of 3N on these 2 auctions doesn't really matter much but I think Phil is overstating things by quite a bit.

I think overcalling 1N is quite bad. 3N was a good bid over it.

The part that this poster shouldn't get 'worked about' is that this isn't an awful result AFAIC. I wasn't clear about the way I stated that.

6-1 spades is a concern but that's tricky diagnosing in the auction.

When our RHO bids spades and then hearts, I'm fairly sure that LHO is going to find the heart lead like....100% of the time?

I didn't comment about 1N but I agree its awful, but it worked out. I'm not as enamored with 3N - it seems North could invite in clubs and you'd find the same spot - when its right. .

I'll be honored to meet any and all Claytons in person.

I think we played some poker in Vegas or Nashville, but I don't remember which. We should have been properly introduced.

I'll be in NO for the last few days, so I look forward to being Claytonized if you and the others will be there for the whole tournament.

Hi,

Passing over 1S is fine, at best you have a min. hand for a
1NT overcall.
I dont think, that your p should have bid 5C over 3H, 4C is more
than enough, even Pass is an option with his hand.

And I think the club suit is slightly to weak for the 3NT call.

With kind regards
Marlowe

5C is a reasonable contract that offers a chance to make, quite sensible at the form of scoring. It also seems to me that the opponents have a good play to make 4H, although it is likely to fail, but I would sure enjoy having the opportunity to play that game.

I don't get it. Opps rate to be about 12 and 6 in HCP. Sure, the first ace rates to be with opener, but isn't the second ace only an 8:6 favourite to be there?
Still decidedly intermediate - don't take my guesses as authoritative.
