Playing in a Robot Bridge Tournament, I picked up in fourth seat, all red:
Scoring: MP
The bidding to me was:
(1♦) - 3♥ - (x) - ?
I knew from experience that if I bid here, my Robot partner would probably leap to a slam. So I passed and awaited developments. The bidding continued:
(3♠) - P - (P) - ?
I felt safe bidding 4♣ here. After all, my LHO opened, my partner made a vul preempt (which GIB does not make lightly, pardon the pun) and my RHO made a negative double. After passing over the negative double, how much could I possibly have?
My partner LEAPED TO 6♥, which was doubled. He held:
Scoring: MP
He went for 500. By the way, I was not alone in this result, as the matchpoint result was just under 25%.
After the bidding was over, I put my mouse pointer over my 4♣ bid. The explanation for my bid was "4+ clubs 1- hearts 26+ HCP."
26+ HCP??????
That cannot be. All of the other bidding was done on a combined 14 HCP at most?
At least I understood why my partner leapt to slam. After all, I had game in hand and he had 8 hearts. LOL.
