As Richard said, I struck gold.

But: partner denied something in diamonds.
So he needs something like

KQxx, Akxx,xxx,Ax

to make 6 a real good contract.
OTOH partner won't have much less, if he bids 3 ♥ over 3 ♣.
So, do whatever you do, make another move.
Kind Regards

Roland

we have to limit our hand in some way, so if you play those serious things do them.

not playing them I'd bid 3♠ as a waiting, before bidding 4♠ next (wich would be the total negative if bid first).

Wow I'm like the only person who would open this 2♠ if I wasn't playing light-ish openers :)

But having opened 1♠, this is a 4♦ bid.

An interesting observation about polls regarding opening calls:

I believe that many people, even if not playing a standard or 2/1 system at the time, are influenced by a "forcing club" background when choosing to open very light. This is not necessarily a bad thing, just an observation.

Justin: you prefer 1S with this hand (A9XXXX QTX K9X Q), but would pass if it were lightly weaker. Do you mean A9XXXX QTX K9X J?

Not really sure how

is a good slam.

I'm not sure how to stay out of slam when it's not there on these types of auctions. I guess my plan is bid 4♦, bid 4♠ over 4♥, and pass 4♠?

Incidentally, this seems like the kind of hand where a lot of B/I would bid 4♠ right now, embarrassed that they'd already overbid their hands.

Still decidedly intermediate - don't take my guesses as authoritative.

Vuroth: Take away the club queen, and we have a NT auction and a slam investigation by a passed hand. It seems that example is not really relevant, other than perhaps responder to 1NT will be comfortable cooperating because he knows he hasn't overstated the hand originally.

This is why people employ a serious/nonserious bid when they're cuebidding. Opener would say "nonserious: i don't have a great hand" and N would likely sign off or maybe stretch and hope for a ♦ cue as one last try.

It's really important to be consistent in the auction, though, especially when partner is unlimited AND searching for slam. If you think your hand was a 1♠ bid to begin with, it must remain a 1♠ bid throughout the entire auction. People who jump to 4♠ opposite an unlimited partner don't understand how to bid.

This is a good slam?

Not in my opinion.

EDIT: Sorry - didn't see the words "not really sure how" above the diagram. I totally agree - it is not a good slam.

So playing frivolous NT, opener would bid 3N rather than cue ♦ here?
I have no experience with FNT and didn`t know it was used like this.

It seems that 3NT would make it very difficult for partner to do anything other than signoff in game, I think when we hold a control we need to show it, below game.

I would have passed in 2nd seat, but 1♠ would be my second choice and at least one of my regular partners would open without a second thought. I don't play with anyone who'd open 2♠, and higher bids are laughable imo.

Having bid 1♠, and using standard J2N (there are many better schemes), I bid 3♣ and hear 3♥, which doesn't promise the A, but does deny a diamond control.

Note that at this stage, neither partner is limited, so here is where either frivolous of serious 3N comes in useful.

Playing F3N, that's my call. I need partner to be able to bid 4♣ over which I will bid 4♦ and pass 4♠, and bid 4♠ over 4♥.

If I weren't playing any form of 3N (and I wouldn't expect a B/I player to use this gadget....heck, I know a few experts who don't use either F3N or S3N), then I would bid 3♠ over 3♥.

I really, really don't understand 4♦...that should be a positive slam move, and this hand has NOT struck gold! Yes, the spade fit helps but why does everyone assume he holds KQxx? No-one ever uses J2N with Q10xx?

And if he has good trumo, he hasn't promised the heart AK yet, nor even the club A. Obviously he has some decent values, but why the rush to the 4-level? It's not as if 3♠ is to play :)

Bid 3♠ and hope to be able to bid 4♦ over 4♣ and then bid or pass 4♠, and haven't we said it all? I mean, he will play us for an opening hand outside of clubs, and we don't hold one....altho the extra spade helps compensate.

Bid 4♦ immediately, and you may be endplaying partner in the auction.
